Oct. 7--NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- It took eight tug boats to move them, but the first Ghost Fleet ships destined for a British scrap yard left the James River on Monday, ending months of planning, debate and protest.
The two rusted Navy oilers -- the Canisteo and Caloosahatchee, built during World War II -- are expected to reach northeast England within 21 days, towed there by an oceangoing tug.
