This advance set of tables presents R&D statistics by industry, size of company,

source of funds, and employment and sales of R&D-performing firms. This is the first set of tables from the annual Survey of Industrial Research and Development that employ the new North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS). They provide statistics on R&D spending for the years 1997-1999, and on R&D personnel for January 1998 to January 2000. The seven tables are:

* Trends in total (Federal plus company and other) U.S. industrial R&D performance, by source of funds, in current and in constant dollars: 1953-99.

* Total (Federal plus company and other) funds for U.S. industrial R&D performance, by industry and by size of company: 1997-99.

* Company and other nonfederal funds for U.S. industrial R&D performance, by industry and by size of company: 1997-99.

* Federal funds for U.S. industrial R&D performance, by industry and by size of company: 1997-99.

* Domestic net sales of U.S. industrial R&D-performing companies, by industry, by size of company: 1999.

* Domestic employment of U.S. industrial R&D-performing companies, by industry, by size of company: 1999.

* Number of full-time equivalent (FTE) R&D scientists and engineers in U.S. industrial R&D-performing companies, by industry and by size of company, by source of R&D funds: January 2000.
